Headline names lead a programme of
literary and professional development
Literature Wales is proud to announce a new programme of creative writing courses at Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre for 2018. The programme offers a mixture of day, weekend and week-long courses for both emerging and experienced writers. Course enrolment is now open, and places can be booked via the Tŷ Newydd website, with a 10% discount on all residential courses until the end of October. Working with some of Wales’ publishers, magazines and producers, the programme will offer professional development for writers as well as a chance to hone their literary craft.
Next year, we will experiment with a greater number of weekend courses for writers eager for a taste of what Tŷ Newydd can offer. These short, affordable courses include Writing about Climate Change, Translating Poetry and Prose, Writing Historical Fiction, Haiku, Poetry and Songwriting and a course on telling and re-telling myths, legends and fairy tales.
There will be a number of week-long courses available also. Many giants in the field of poetry will visit Tŷ Newydd as tutors throughout the year, including Lemn Sissay, Jo Shapcott, Maura Dooley, Gillian Clarke, Pascale Petit and Carol Ann Duffy, and courses will vary from poetry for beginners to Poetry Masterclasses. We are even offering a course on Poetry and Nature where the tutors will bring microscopes, binoculars, bat detectors and insect nets to inspire the creation of a poetic zoo. We will also examine the border between poetry and lyrics, where we’ll welcome the world-famous Willy Russell, creator of Blood Brothers to the centre.
Our prose offerings will include courses in the detective and romance genres; short stories with Tyler Keevil and Rachel Trezise; and Writing Your Novel with Alys Conran and Louis de Bernières, the author of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. A course for young writers with reduced fees has also been organised in partnership with Parthian Books and Wales Arts Review to encourage new, budding authors to hone their work for publication. Also offered is a course on writing for children, and another for writing for young adults featuring award-winning Kiran Millwood Hargrave, the author of The Girl of Ink & Stars as our guest reader.
Writing for radio and the stage will feature in the programme, and Dirty Protest will reside at the centre for the duration of a course on Playwriting and Theatricality tutored by Hamish Pirie and Tim Price. Courses in non-fiction, storytelling, and creative writing for Welsh-learners will also return next year.
