Folding Rock Retreat: Writing for publications
On this retreat, we’ll be joined by the founding editors of the Wales-based literary magazine, Folding Rock, established in 2024 to help put Wales and Welsh writing on the map. Workshops will focus on shaping your ideas in the short form: creating bold, memorable and self-contained short pieces of fiction and creative non-fiction, ideal for magazines and journals. The tutors will take you behind the scenes of Folding Rock and provide guidance and workshops on efficient self-editing (for both fiction and non-fiction) and on working with an editor; preparing and proposing your writing for consideration, as well as on building a portfolio of work that will get you noticed. We’ll look at the intricate process of submitting your writing for the best chance of success, but we’ll also look at how to deal graciously with rejections and how to pick yourself up and go again.
The week will include one-to-one feedback sessions and, as a group, a Folding Rock ‘editorial meeting’, discussing content ideas for the magazine, issue themes, and offering the chance to have your perspective heard, as a writer, navigating the world of literary journals.
We’ll be joined online during the week by representatives from some of the other leading publications platforming writers today.
