Bursary Terms and Conditions

  • The Bursary Fund is a competitive fund, awarded to successful applicants pending an application process. Please note that we cannot guarantee financial assistance due to the high volume of applications.
  • The bursary amount awarded to successful applicants will vary between £100 – £250 depending on the length of the course. Application deadlines are set 2 calendar months before the course start date, with decisions made within the following 7 working days. Details including the application deadline date and the bursary amount for each course can be found on individual course listings, available here: tynewydd.wales/courses-retreats/
  • Tŷ Newydd’s Bursary Fund is available for writers who cannot otherwise afford the full course fee. The application process will not assess the quality of creative writing, but will focus on the applicant’s need for financial assistance, and the applicant’s demonstrated intent to attend the course to develop their writing craft and career. The assessment panel will be made up of experienced Literature Wales staff members. The assessment panel reserves the right to consider Literature Wales’ strategic priorities when selecting successful applicants, for example focusing on selecting diverse and representative writers in terms of geography, writing experience, languages, and any lived experience noted in the application that will present a new perspective to Welsh writing.
  • Tŷ Newydd’s Bursary Fund is only available to writers living in Wales.
  • Travel to and from Tŷ Newydd must be arranged, and paid for, by the bursary recipient.
  • Literature Wales only offers one bursary per course at Tŷ Newydd, and cannot consider applications from successful applicants for any additional courses in the same year. Applicants may apply for additional bursaries in different years, but new applicants will be prioritised.
  • One space will be reserved on each course in anticipation of a bursary recipient. Should no bursary requests be received for a specific course upon the application deadline, that reserved space will be released.
  • Upon receiving confirmation that their bursary application has been successful, the bursary recipient must confirm their booking by paying a deposit. A non-refundable and non-transferable deposit is required to secure their booking with 7 working days of their bursary offer. After which, the recipient can request to pay the balance in instalments or pay the balance in full 6 weeks prior to the course start date.
  • If the bursary award is not confirmed by payment of a deposit within 7 days of notification, the bursary will be withdrawn, and the provisional booking cancelled.
  • It is a condition of the award that bursary recipients must submit a short written report by email within two weeks of the end of their chosen course, describing their experience and the impact it will have on their writing. A template will be provided.
  • Successful applicants agree to being named by Literature Wales as bursary recipients, on our website, social media channels, and in relevant reports.
  • Applicants will be notified of the decision on their application, whether successful or unsuccessful, within 7 working days of the application deadline.
  • Literature Wales reserves the right to award applicants a lower amount than they applied for, not to award a bursary at all, or to withdraw the bursary fund in whole or in part at any time.
  • Should a bursary recipient need to transfer to a different course following their booking, a new application must be completed, in line with Tŷ Newydd’s Booking Terms and Conditions.
  • Should a bursary recipient need to cancel a booking, the bursary award will be withdrawn but a fresh application can be made in the future.
  • Our decisions on bursary awards are final and we will not enter into any correspondence or debate on the assessment panel’s decision.
  • We reserve the right to prioritise those who have not received any other funding (including grants or fees) from Literature Wales in the past 12 months.
  • Tŷ Newydd Bursaries cannot be exchanged in whole or in part for any cash equivalent, nor transferred to another person.
  • Literature Wales reserves the right to withdraw any offer of a bursary if the conditions of the award are not met.
