Literature Wales aims to enable everybody in Wales who would benefit from a course at Tŷ Newydd to do so, regardless of income or level of experience. Working with writers on low income has been identified as one of Literature Wales’ priorities, along with writers from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, and writers with disabilities or illnesses (both mental and physical). Our aim is to create equal and fair access to artistic innovation and professional development, and to assist the development of new and diverse voices.
Literature Wales is a charity, and all income raised through Tŷ Newydd courses goes back into keeping the centre and its activities running, and towards other literary projects across Wales.
As part of our commitment to making Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre and its courses as accessible as possible, Literature Wales is pleased to offer a bursary for each course programmed in 2024. Bursaries will be awarded to select writers who are unable to afford the full course fee following a simple application process.
The bursary amount will vary between up to £250 depending on the length of the course.
Application deadlines are set 2 calendar months before the course start date, with decisions made by a panel of Literature Wales staff within the following 7 working days.
Details including the application deadline date and the bursary amount for each course can be found on individual course listings, available here: www.tynewydd.wales/courses-retreats/
Before applying for a bursary to attend a residential course, please consider:
If the course fee still makes it difficult for you to attend, and if you are 18 or older and living in Wales, you may be eligible to apply for a bursary. To apply, please complete this application form. Full terms and conditions can be read here before completing the application form.
Please note that you will need to request financial assistance before booking a course. Bursary requests cannot be considered after a booking has been made. Please note that we cannot always guarantee financial assistance due to the high volume of applications.
As well as support for course fees, we have a limited amount of funding earmarked to support writers with additional access needs. This funding is for writers whose access needs would result in additional costs, not incurred by a writer without those needs. If you feel you would qualify for extra financial support, please contact us to discuss your requirements. As a guide, we will support expenses such as travel costs over and above a standard journey, for example the price difference between a fully accessible taxi and a standard fare but, regretfully, we do not have the means to cover major costs, although, if you need to bring a PA with you on a residential, we can provide room and board at no additional cost). For more access information please visit the accessibility section on our website and please do get in touch if you have any questions.
Fundraising for bursaries is ongoing through various events and activities. Generous donations and contributions from visitors and friends are gratefully received throughout the year. If you would like to donate to the bursary fund, please contact Literature Wales:
