Elin Angharad is an artist who’s interest lies within the working relationship between image, word and sound, and within their complimentary and contradictory historical and contemporary inter-functions. A strand of her artistic work includes creating and curating zines. The philosophical basis of zines is to share information and personal histories that aren't represented by the mainstream media with others, and through means afforded - usually cheaply or DIY. This brave and strong visual aesthetic is a reflection of the creativity that is realised from having next to nothing at disposal, and is the perfect epitome of everybody's equal right to - and worth in - their own personal and creative expression. Day course: Zine Making
Over the past few years, Zines have become an increasingly popular form of sharing stories, work and creative ideas. These booklets offer exciting opportunities for writers and artists together to experiment with several media and combine words and visual art in entertaining, original and provocative ways.
During this one-day course, you will have the opportunity to create your own zine under the guidance of experienced zine creator Elin Angharad, curator of the Welsh Zine Library. From planning, curating content and words, learning collage techniques, to designing format and page layout and exploring experimental methods of folding your booklets, your tutor will be there to encourage, advise and support you. The course is suitable for poets and writers together, as well as visual artists. You are welcome to bring your own words and pictures to the course, or a variety of resources will also be available during the day. During the day, you will also be encouraged to learn more about the history of zines and how to adapt ‘mistakes’ as an integral part of the creation process. So join us, and get ready to be playful with images and words and shape and form your creativity in a whole new way.
Our day courses are suitable for those without much or any experience in the world of creative writing, as well as for those with some previous experience. In a friendly, welcoming setting, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from experienced tutors. Those who are curious about creative writing, or those looking for an opportunity to turn their hand to something new, are very welcome. If you wish to discuss this or any of our 2025 courses, and their suitability, please contact us for an informal chat.
Tea, coffee and snacks are available all day, and a light lunch is included in the fee. If you’re travelling from far away, or if you would like to stay the night, please ask us for availability and prices upon booking, or take a look at our Writers’ Retreat Cottage, Nant.
